At the age of 11 I landed wrong on a vault. My coach had me try it again even though my ankle was hurting, and when I landed again I collapsed in a heap in excruciating pain. I insisted my mother be called and she came and took me to the hospital. Although my coach thought it might just be an ankle twist and I should tape it and fight through the pain, the exam and x-ray revealed not only a hairline fracture but a chipped bone fragment. I not only had a sprain but a broken ankle.
They had to wait for the swelling from the sprain to subside before I could get a cast for the break. It took two casts over 4 months and physical therapy for a year, and I still limped for 3 years.
I shudder to think what would have happened if I had just taped it and worked through the pain. That was 30 years ago before RICE was commonly known beyond the medical community.
So always get your sprain examined. It may be more than a sprain.
