I am currently recovering from a sprained ankle. I tripped on a sidewalk about two months ago. I went to an urgent care center the next day and was given a brace. Technically, I was able to walk more than 4 steps (it hurt regardless if I walked on it or not), it was swollen and black and blue, but I'd seen worse when I googled it. Everyone made me feel like I was being a baby about it and it was "just a sprain."
When several weeks later I was still in pain, I finally got an MRI that showed a complete ligament tear. A lot different from a minor sprain. I still was told it would heal faster if I walked on it with the brace. It did not, it only got worse. I ordered a boot online myself (twice, actually, as the first boot was horrible and I was given no guidance on what to get, for my second order I just got the most expensive one I could find). Wearing the fancy boot nonstop for the next four weeks (and using crutches on top of that when needed) and only now am I starting to feel better. Meaning I'm not in pain 24/7.
I'm annoyed I had to suffer for so long and resort to self help methods because doctors can't seem to agree on the best protocol. Here's my advice-- if it hurts, use a boot and/or crutches until it doesn't. Don't force yourself to "heal faster" by using a less supportive brace or forgoing crutches because it's "just a sprain".
