I have very wide feet, never wore tight shoes and went barefoot for years and then essentially barefoot by walking all around San Francisco for a year in flat Chinese slipperswhich is what caused my high arches to collapse and the ensuing PF. Now I don't take a step barefoot. I always wear the great Powerstep over-the-counter orthotics in Crocs (the only shoes wide enough for me, but which don't have enough arch support themselves to help my PF). This combo works so much better than any of the custom or other orthotics, exercise, NSAIDs, ice or shots I tried over the years. Watch out for the Powerstep maroon style, though (think it's called Pinnacle Maxx) it has a few degrees of supination to straighten the ankle angle, which sounded good but gave me ankle pain and instability. The regular blue ones or padded blue ones, both full and 3/4, are life-saving.
