    Orthotics, Taping

Back when I suffered from this condition the pain was often so bad that it was often difficult to walk. My Chiropractor explained that it was due to the ligaments losing their ability to stretch due to aging which causes them to pull away from the heel bone. She instructed me to tape a rolled up gauze pad to my heel where it was most painful. Though that sounds like a bad idea it forced the ligaments to stop pulling away from the bone allowing the site to heal. It was moderately painful for a few days (not nearly as painful as it was before) and virtually pain free after a week. The long term instructions that she added was to never, ever wear shoes without arch support. I have had no flare ups since then and this was achieved without drugs or surgery.
