Several years ago I started to run half marathons and my heel pain steadily got worse as my mileage increased during training. Last year it peaked and I stopped training for my fall half because the pain was so intense. I have tried all the "usual" treatment - ice, stretches, braces, better shoes, etc but resting and taking a break from running is the only thing that works long term for me.
