In winter 2012-13, I developed a lower-back/SI joint problem that caused excruciating pain in my buttocks and hips when I was sitting. Because my work requires me to sit at a desk and I drive to work, the problem interfered significantly with my day-to-day life. Over the next 2 1/2 years, I spent thousands of dollars on chiropractors, physiotherapists, exercise videos, and twice-a-week rehab exercise sessions. I also saw an osteopath and a physiatrist, and had an MRI. No one could say what, exactly, the problem was, let alone fix it. I had read Esther Gokhale's book Eight Steps to a Pain-Free Back, but I had never managed to get the exercises straight. In August 2015, I travelled to Ashland, Oregon, for a two-day Gokhale workshop with Kathleen Marie. Her hands-on instruction in the Gokhale Method gave me a set of simple exercises that I practice every day. Fourteen months later, I have no pain and have not seen a physiotherapist since July 2015. Best thing I ever did for myself!
