My knees have hurt off and on since my late 20s. The better shape I was in the more they hurt (because being in shape meant damaging exercise).The pain reach a peek in my early 40s. My knees would hurt when I was sitting still. I thought I might need knee replacement but resisted. I have found that consistent PT targeting and strengthening the muscles all around my knees has eliminated the pain. I do non-impact cardiovascular exercises (biking & elliptical trainer (backwards)), which keeps me in shape for the occasional indulgence in tennis. The glucosomine/condroitin has never worked for me and the pills are way too large.
