I tore my ACL skiing. My doctor explained that some people do fine with a torn ACL and it should not get in the way of "life" but may be an issue if I want to remain very active. He also explained that, in any case, surgery would have to wait several months until all the swelling recedes. This would be a good time for me to investigate and make a final decision. During the next 4 months I was able to hike and bike. I saw a very rapid improvement during the first 2-3 months but then things plateaued. It became obvious that I would not achieve a full recovery without surgery. The two weeks following the surgery were not fun as I had to use crutches everywhere (not because of pain, but in order to protect the bone). Thereafter, I started recovering very quickly. I matched my pre-surgery fitness level within 3 months an my pre-injury level with about 6-9 months.
