Done everything in the world for Runner's Knee ever written and still can't get rid of it after nearly 3 months. Stopped running, worked on thigh and leg strength (started biking 20MPH plus for 45 minutes 3X per week). Strength training, hip strengthening, cushioned shoes -- check, check, check. Nothing wrong with the knee structurally. Oh, also tried straps and more recently braces too to keep the patella from moving. I've come to the conclusion if you get runner's knee, there might not be a cure except a long time healing away from running.

I actually got it when I started doing lots of yoga. Running doesn't irritate it as bad but still can cause it.
They sell braces for the patella band that you can wear while you run and they really help! They're like $10-$15. I just wear them basically any time I work out now and no more painCheryl Runner's Knee (PFPS)

I have chondromalacia patella with Patellar subluxation in my left knee. A patella tendon strap helps.

I think I get it because my foot tends to point inward. I have spent lots of money on physio, but the exercises are tedious and it's difficult to tell they are working. I cut down my running to about ten miles a week, and although I am not as fast, I am not injured nearly as much. I also wear a knee strap, which might help; it does not hurt anyway. I am a bit suspicious that running lots of laps around 400m tracks does not help. I tried bare-foot type running shoes in the past. They made me change my running style, but I still got knee problems. I have tried orthotics too. My knee problem cleared up quickly, but I became prone to twisting my ankle.

There is a strap you can get for runner's knee. I've had some success with it. What helped me more, other than losing weight, was to do conditioning exercises for my quads and hamstrings and to consistently foam roll my IT band and all of my quads.

I had very mild runners knee and a cho-pat strap really seemed to help, keep it from bothering me during long runs. Slow/deliberate leg extensions are also supposed to help.

Rest, ice, ice, ice and ibuprofen.
Protech knee strap (see site below). Worked well for me when I had a similar problem.
Run every other day for awhile. Stay off hills.
