Rest, stretching and massaging w creams and oils. Doctor will not give me a cortisone shot out of fear it would be to painful. I really do need something done.

Partial tear of Achilles playing competitive tennis. Still feeling the effects over two years afterwards. Have tried many treatments. Orthodics, NSAIDs, and high quality brace have been the most helpful but not enough to resume competitve play. Discouraged.

Tendon deteriorated with no specific injury to start the process. 2 years of pain and lots of PT and one PRP injection (was pure hell) that didn't help and made it more sore. 2nd opinion finally and the surgeon recommended a 'strayer' procedure on my calf to lengthen the muscle and take the pressure off my tendon. That worked about 80%. I can walk now and if I over do it - it gets sore. But way better than before the surgery. My tendon has scar tissue on it but is working and I can function again.

Ice worked well but nothing else has my feet hurt and the area around the Achilles area is swollen and it's hard to walk at times

I had problems for a while and RICE'd it, reduced volume etc but honestly one of the best things way wearing this when I wasn't swim/bike/running

    http://www.cepcompression.com/...ssion-achilles-brace

This was mild achilles tendonitis but it did stop me running for a while and forced me to aqua-run to keep volume up.

Years ago I hurt my Achilles trying to train up to running 3 miles. I figure I was heavy and trained too quickly, but the result was PT recommended by an orthopedist.

It took a long time to heal and even then it would re-injure if I tried to run or even if I just bumped it. Clearly, my lower leg muscles were just too weak. But I didn't know what to do.

Wife was a runner, and eventually I got better shoes (I needed a lot of motion control) recommended by someone who analyzed my gait.

I began to run/walk with VERY slow/small increases in distance.

I ran relatively slowly compared to pretty much everyone.

I wore an Achilles strap similar to this: http://www.footsmart.com/p-pro-tec-achilles-tendon-strap-10012.aspx

I iced my Achilles after every run no matter how it felt.

I applied a heating pad at night, massaged the lower leg, then iced it almost every night.

Eventually, me legs strengthened, I trained up to 18 mile runs, and I stopped using the Achilles strap for most of my runs. I still frequently ice, but not after every run.

    So, it's a happy ending.

I also learned that I don't really need the motion control sneakers. I have completed 3 mile and 6 mile runs barefoot and in minimalist shoes.

Assumptions about shoes I needed were clearly incorrect, but that's a complex issue I won't get into here. I still use Brooks Beast (highly MC shoes) on my long runs.

I hope this helps. I have never found that doctors, even sports-focused orthopedist doctors, necessarily know much about how to help a recreational endurance runner

Achilles pain is not something where you want to "tough it out" because if you were to actually tear your achilles, it would take months or even YEARS to fully heal. Respect that tendon! Rest and let your body recover before you start running again. I wore an ankle brace the first week or so after my achilles starting hurting, and then I foam rolled & stretched like a madwoman. No issues anymore except some tightness right when I get out of bed on some days.
